Seed-only diets are often nutritionally incomplete — birds can selectively eat the fatty seeds and skip the rest, missing vitamins and minerals. Vets increasingly recommend a pelleted base with seed, fresh vegetables and the occasional treat, rather than seed as the sole diet.
Roughly a tablespoon of mix per bird per day is typical, but check for a full crop (visible fullness at the base of the neck) rather than an empty dish — husks left in the bowl can look like uneaten food when the seed inside has already been eaten.
Pet specialists and online retailers carry the widest range for small pets — supermarkets typically stock only one or two mainstream brands. Every product page here links to the specific UK merchants that stock it; see our full merchant directory.
