Frequently asked questions

Do reptiles need live food, or will pellets/dried food do?

It depends entirely on the species: many lizards and all snakes are obligate or near-obligate carnivores needing live or frozen-thawed prey, while some (bearded dragons, tortoises) do well on a mixed diet of pellets, greens and appropriately-sized live food. Check what's realistic for your specific species.

Why does gut-loading/supplementing matter for reptile food?

Live feeder insects are only as nutritious as what they've eaten — "gut-loading" them with a nutritious diet before feeding, plus dusting with calcium/vitamin D3 supplements, is usually necessary to prevent metabolic bone disease, especially in fast-growing species.

Where can I buy reptile food in the UK?

Specialist retailers and online shops carry far more range than general pet shops for this category. Every product page here links to the UK merchants that stock it — see our full merchant directory.
